SMEs warned over telemarketing practices

Recent research by the Telephone Preference Service has revealed that 29% of small businesses that use telemarketing are not aware of their legal obligations with regard to screening telephone numbers.

Under telecommunications regulations introduced in 1999, telemarketers are legally required to run telephone and fax numbers against central registers maintained by the TPS, to ensure that they do not contact people who have expressly requested not to receive direct marketing communications.

Firms that fail to comply with the regulations could face fines of up to £5,000.

For more information on the regulations affecting businesses, visit the Telephone Preference Service website www.tpsonline.org.uk
