CBI defends right to opt out of the Working Time Directive

The Confederation of British Industry has launched a campaign to preserve the right of employees to work longer weekly hours than the amount stipulated by EU regulations.

The European Working Time Directive states that staff can work a maximum of 48 hours in one week, but the UK currently has an opt-out which is due to expire later this year.

Director general of the CBI, Digby Jones, said, 'Further restrictions on working time would be a kick in the teeth for many firms, particularly smaller ones'.   A survey of 400 firms suggested that business would suffer a 'significant or severe impact' should the right to opt out of the Directive be removed.

The issue will be debated by the European Commission later in the year.
